2 Save Energy Launches AMI Enabled Customer Information Display
For Immediate Release London, UK – August 2, 2011
2 Save Energy Ltd (2SE) a leader in consumer wireless electricity monitors and the manufacturer of the OWL® product family, announced its first commercial deployment of AMI-enabled Customer Information Display (CID) technology integrating with Sensus. Based on its Z-Smart Customer Information Display developed in 2010 for use in ZigBee® enabled Home Area Network (HAN) deployments, 2SE has leveraged its modular communication platform to integrate with the Sensus FlexNet communication protocol and create its F-Smart series CID. F-Smart is a key component in the major smart metering project currently under way in the U.K. in collaboration with Sensus, a global leader in smart metering and utility communications infrastructure.
“The energy conservation and cost reduction value of CIDs has been recognized by Utilities worldwide for over a decade”, commented David McTurk, CEO of 2SE whose consumer CIDs have sold more than 600,000 units worldwide under the OWL brand. ”A wireless display that can communicate across the Home Area Network is a technology evolution that adds value to the smart grid infrastructure from both the Utility and customer’s perspective. We are very excited about this project and our collaboration with Sensus to bring this capability to the marketplace so early in its emergence”.
Many electricity utilities have made major investments in smart metering systems that can move meter data wirelessly through mesh radio networks, and can collect time-based consumption readings to support time-based utility rate structures. Increasingly, utilities are looking for additional value from this investment, providing a platform for HANs, smart devices, and command/control functionality for demand response, other grid stability initiatives, and extended customer services.
CIDs provide a key missing communication link, real-time cost, to consumers. Electricity is an “invisible” resource and is easy to waste unnoticed. These displays show the actual cost of electricity being used in the home, alongside other measurements, and have a material impact on behaviour as residents become aware of the cost and see the immediate savings (feedback) of simple energy conservation actions. Evidence demonstrates that CIDs can drive 7-20% reduction in consumption, paying for themselves every year, while eliminating as much as 300kg of greenhouse gas from a typical home.
Smart grid technology is a generic term for the communications systems and enabled devices that can assist utilities in better monitoring and managing their distribution infrastructure, electric, gas or water. The proliferation of wireless technology allows for a new layer of instrumentation and data collection over existing utility infrastructure that can be deployed cost-effectively.

ENERGY STAR® Qualified New Homes Include
Cent-@-meter Electricity Display
For Immediate Release May 6, 2008
(Toronto, Ontario) Eco-Response Technologies Inc., announced today that the Cent-@-meter® wireless in-home electricity display will start appearing in ENERGY STAR® qualified new homes in Ontario this summer.
Starting in May 2008, Ontario’s Green Builder of the Year - Reid’s Heritage Homes, will incorporate the Cent-@-meter® as a feature in their ENERGY STAR® qualified homes in new communities where they plan to build. At Reid’s Heritage Homes, electricity savings come from both energy efficient equipment and the impact of real-time display on electricity use.
[REID’S QUOTE: ”Our customers are becoming increasingly proactive in finding ways to reduce their environmental footprint. As a home builder, we are uniquely positioned to provide cost-effective solutions such as the Cent-@-meter® when the home is built,” says Ron Salisbury Home Performance Manager of Reid’s Heritage Homes. “The Cent-@-meter is easy to operate and an attractive, value-added feature that we know our customers will appreciate.” ]
To homebuyers, energy efficiency environmental footprint are increasingly important criteria when selecting a new home. Industry research concludes that homeowners that see their real-time electricity cost take simple actions that reduce their electricity use by more than 10%.
“An in-home display provides shows instantly how much electricity is being used and the cost to the homeowner. This simple information is proven to make consumers actively seek opportunities to save -”, noted Neal Bach, Director of Toronto-based Eco-Response Technologies Inc. “While a running tap is visibly money down the drain, wasted electricity is largely invisible, at least until the bill arrives. Cent-@-meter® makes electricity visible and naturally shapes a more energy conscious lifestyle that also saves money.”
Cent-@-meter® is the recipient of international design awards and is certified compliant for use worldwide, including CSA and IC for use in Canada. It installs in minutes with patented sensors that require no electrical connections or meter modification. The display can toggle between electricity (kW), cost, or kg GHG emissions.
Cent-@-meter® travels with the Sustainable Condo, sponsored by the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). It is endorsed by Sustainable Buildings Canada and is featured on the Discovery Channel series, “Wa$ted”, airing in April and May 2008 about global warming and innovative technologies that make a difference.
